Nevada runs its own background checks through the Nevada State Police, so your dealer contacts the state rather than the FBI, and a fee applies to each check. There is no purchase permit and no waiting period. Private sales are different: since January 2020 an unlicensed seller and buyer must meet at a licensed dealer, who runs the check before the firearm changes hands, with exceptions for immediate family and a few temporary transfers. Federal ages apply at a dealer, 21 for handguns and 18 for long guns.

Nevada requires a permit to carry a concealed firearm, so this is not a permitless carry state. The concealed firearm permit is issued by the sheriff of your county, after fingerprints and a Nevada-certified firearms course, and runs five years. Nonresidents who take a qualifying course in Nevada can apply as well. Open carry of a firearm is generally lawful without a permit, subject to state and local restrictions and posted private property. Processing can take up to 120 days, so apply early.
Nevada deer tags are issued by draw, so the first step is the application, not the rifle. In the Reno area, Unit 195 runs an any-legal-weapon mule deer season October 5 to November 2, 2026, while Units 194 and 196 in the Carson Range and the southern units around Las Vegas run November 5 to 30. Muzzleloader falls in September and early October and archery in August and early September. Centerfire rifles and centerfire handguns of .22 caliber or larger are legal for big game.
Unit 195 takes in the Virginia Range on the edge of Reno, with an any-legal-weapon mule deer season October 5 to November 2, while units 194 and 196 in the Carson Range run November 5 to 30. Every deer tag is issued by draw.
Mule deer and chukar country starts at the edge of town in the Virginia and Pah Rah ranges, and Nevada's high desert means long shots and hard walking for anyone who hunts out of Reno.
