You apply to the county clerk where you live, the State Police run the background investigation, and the clerk issues the license to qualified applicants 21 and older. Training of at least eight hours, including live fire, is required. If no license or denial arrives within 45 days of your fingerprint receipt, that receipt works as your license when carried with your state identification. Open carry of a legally owned firearm is lawful in many places, with pistol-in-vehicle rules tied to the license.
The Michigan firearm deer season runs November 15 to 30, 2026, with a short December firearm season December 4 to 6 and a late antlerless firearm season December 7 to January 1 in most Lower Peninsula units. Archery runs October 1 to November 14 and again December 1 to January 1. The big change for 2026 is that the limited firearms zone is gone, so all legal firearms, including standard bottleneck rifle cartridges, may be used across the Lower Peninsula. Baiting remains banned in the Lower Peninsula.
